Object Quorum: West Space Exhibition

Story

Hello!

Thanks in advance for your support!!

We are raising funds to go towards exhibition costs and a printed publication for our show Object Quorum, currently on at West Space. We're aiming to raise a total of $4,000 for this project and will allow us to cover our costs and make something great!

West Space has been chosen as a Lead Organisation by the Creative Partnerships Australia Initiative, which means that money we raise here will be matched by them. Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you pledge up to $2,000 will be matched through their Match Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative, provided we reach our target!

About the show:

Object Quorum investigates the possibility of removing one's subjectivity from the act of selecting. Over a period of 28 days, artists Madé Spencer-Castle and Alice Mathieu will assemble one collection of objects each, stemming from the same object of unknown origin. Each day the artists will bring a new object to the gallery to add to their collections, leaving it in the foyer to be placed chronologically by West Space staff. To minimise external influence regarding our acquisitions, we are not allowed to enter the space, see each others' collections or discuss acquisitions with anyone during the project.  Our individual collections will culminate when we present our artist talk on Thursday 12 June, as it will be the first time that we see each others' collections.

The second stage of Object Quorum is the creation of a publication. The publication will serve as an archive of Object Quorum, immortalising the collections and ourselves.  The objects will be professionally documented and formatted into a full colour fold out concertina that replicates the exhibition presentation, allowing the reader to view and compare both collections simultaneously.  It will be distributed to private and public collecting bodies in Australia and internationally, allowing the collection and exhibition to exist for future generations to come.  In this way, the publication replicates the legacy that remains once collectors have gone, and all that remains is their collection.

Where will the money go?

Publication: $1,800
Object Acquisition budget: $1000
Artist fees: $700
Floor vinyl: $250
Display materials: $100
Transportation of objects: $150
TOTAL: $4,000

This is the first object:

'All objects must agree', 2013. Madé Spencer-Castle & Alice Mathieu. Archival inkjet print.

All objects must agree was the first iteration of Object Quorum which involved the artists collecting a new object each day for 28 days, stemming from an almost identical 15th century silver coin.

    West Space

West Space is a non-profit artist-led organisation supporting the activities of artists within a critical context. West Space programming foregrounds engaged artistic practice which is challenging, experimental, exploratory, and diverse.

Founded in 1993, West Space has developed a unique identity amongst Australian arts organisations. This reputation has been forged through a sustained belief in the importance of artist-run initiatives to practitioners, audiences and the art industry. As an organisation that is run by artists, West Space is fully engaged with the multiplicity of practices that artists embrace. Importantly, West Space acts as a working model that gives artists direct control over the means and conditions of presenting their work to the public.
